The United Malays National Organization ( UMNO , Malay Pertubuhan Kebangsaan Melayu Bersatu ) is a national conservative political party in Malaysia .

It was the largest political party in Malaysia by votes until 2018 and, as a founding member of the Barisan Nasional, has been in government without interruption since the country's independence until 2018.

Membership in the party was and is reserved for members of the Malay ethnic group . The UMNO advocates Malay nationalism (the controversial Bumiputra policy was initiated by the UMNO), advocates the preservation of Islamic values and economic liberalism within the Malaysian New Economic Policy .

founding

After the British returned to the Malaya colony after World War II , the independence movement opposed the establishment of a Malay Union . At a congress on May 11, 1946 , the UMNO was founded in Johor Bahru . Onn Jaafar was the first head of the party.

Onn Jaafar wanted to make the party accessible to all ethnicities in 1951 and rename it to United Malaya National Organization , but failed with his plan and resigned in protest. His position was taken by Tunku Abdul Rahman , who led the country to independence in 1957 .

Former UMNO chairman Najib Razak was Malaysia's Prime Minister from April 2009 to May 2018 . All five of Najib's predecessors, including Abdullah Ahmad Badawi and Mahathir bin Mohamad , were also UMNO members.
