Dälek is an American hip hop group from Newark , New Jersey .

Dälek at the concert on December 19, 2004 in Club W71 in Weikersheim

Dälek consists of MC Dälek (Will Brooks, MC), The Oktopus (Alap Momin, producer) and Still (Hsi-Chang Lin, DJ, producer). Dälek produce relatively dark, experimental hip-hop. In contrast to almost all other current hip-hop acts, rap does not carry the main weight of the piece, but sounds and beats play an at least as important role. Most of the time, MC Dälek is not mixed forward in the recordings. He himself says: Lyrics have always been essential to hip hop, but it doesn't have to sound like karaoke. My Bloody Valentine , the sound hobbyists of the early 1990s, are one of her greatest role models . Likewise hip hop classics like Public Enemyor Boogie Down Productions . They are mostly compared in meetings with Public Enemy and The Bomb Squad in particular .

The band often refers to influences from rock and experimental music, which is atypical of the genre. They have already toured with the Melvins , ISIS and Jesu , and released a record with the Krautrock band Faust . Since the second album they have been releasing together on Ipecac Recordings , the label of Mike Patton . Other collaborations were more electronically oriented, such as with Kid 606 or Techno Animal. They are currently producing a single with country musician Laura Minor . They see themselves in the tradition of early and experimental hip-hop and refer in particular to Afrika Bambaataa , who himself brought music of all styles into his music.

In 2005, they separated from DJ Still, as Will & Oktopus decided to work again - as before - with changing guest DJs and musicians.
