Dallas Wind Symphony (since 2014: Dallas Winds ) is the name of a symphonic wind orchestra ( concert band ) from Dallas ( Texas , USA ). Recordings by the orchestra were nominated for a Grammy Award in 1993 and 2007.

history

The orchestra was founded in 1985 by Kim Campbell and Howard Dunn, professors of music at Southern Methodist University . It was originally intended to give freelance musicians the opportunity to continue playing sophisticated music for a symphonic band after leaving high school and college . After initially occasional public performances, a series of concerts was established in the Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center from 1990 onwards .

After Howard Dunn's death in 1991, Jerry F. Junkin, Director of Bands at the University of Texas at Austin , became the new artistic director and conductor in 1993 . From the mid-1990s until his death in 2004, Frederick Fennell also worked as an important guest conductor with the orchestra.
