Dalmellington ( Gaelic : Dail M'Fhaolain ) is a town in the south of the Scottish Council Area East Ayrshire . It is located around 20 km southeast of Ayr and 55 km northwest of Dumfries .
history
The settlement of the Dalmellington area can be traced back a long way. There is a hill fort in the city center . In 1607 Dalmellington received the rights of a Burgh of Barony . The city developed in connection with coal mining and textile production. With the opening of more coal mines in the 20th century, the village grew. The last mine closed in 1978. Now, however, coal is being mined again around Dalmellington.
traffic
Dalmellington is connected to the trunk road network via the A61 (Ayr - Castle Douglas ). A station to supply the iron and steel works in Waterside was opened in 1856. Later the railway line was also used for passenger traffic.
