Waterside is a village in the north of the Scottish Council Area East Ayrshire or in the traditional county of Ayrshire . It is located about four kilometers northwest of Dalmellington and 14 kilometers southeast of central Ayr on the Doon River .
history
The village developed with the establishment of a steelworks in 1847. After the conversion to a brickworks in 1936, the factory was operated under various names until its closure in 1976, including Waterside Ironworks , Dalmellington Ironworks and Houldsworth Ironworks . In 1998 an industrial museum called the Dunaskin Open-Air Museum was opened on the site , but it had to close again in 2005. Due to its high industrial and historical importance, the entire complex is now a listed building as a Scheduled Monument . The Waterside Engine House is classified as the highest category A monument.
Formerly an industrial settlement, 1681 people still lived in Waterside in 1871. With the decline of the local plant in 1991, only 135 inhabitants were counted.
traffic
The A713 ( Castle Douglas –Ayr) is the main thoroughfare from Waterside. To supply the steel works and coal mines, Waterside received its own rail connection in 1853. After the National Coal Board still operated the route in the 20th century, it was finally abandoned. Since 2002 the Scottish Industrial Railway Center has been showing an exhibition on local railway history on the former factory premises.
