Damià Forment or Spanish Damián Forment (* around 1480 in Valencia (?); † around 1540 in Santo Domingo de la Calzada ) was the most important Spanish sculptor of the 16th century. Little reliable data is known about his life and work.

biography

Possibly born in Valencia, he received - according to the not undisputed opinion of some researchers - important stimuli for his later artistic work during a trip to Italy, on which he is said to have visited the cities of Rome and Florence, among others. From 1500 to 1509 he seems to have worked in Valencia; then he moved to Zaragoza , where he spent most of his life and probably also had a workshop with auxiliary workers.

In Damià Forments' work, which consists of alabaster and wood carvings , the figure style and spatial conception of late Gothic and Renaissance meet . Some of the twisted and stretched figures in his late work already seem to hint at the Mannerist conception of art . None of his works are signed, most of them were ascribed to him or are linked to his name in documents that have been preserved (contracts, accounts, etc.).
