Daniel "Dan" Lewis (born December 11, 1902 in Maerdy , County Glamorgan , † 1965 ) was a Welsh football goalkeeper .

Career stations

Lewis' first club was Clapton Orient (now Leyton Orient ). In 1924 he went to Arsenal FC . The goalkeeper made his debut on November 15, 1924 against Everton FC . After initially good games, he was appointed substitute goalkeeper after a 5-0 defeat against Huddersfield Town . Only when the new trainer Herbert Chapman came, Lewis was the number one of the "Gunners" again. In total, he came to 169 missions from 1924 to 1931. In May 1931 he moved to Gillingham FC . There he was only used six times and ended his playing career in 1932.

With Arsenal FC he won the English championship in 1931 and the English Cup in 1930.

Internationally, he played three times for the Welsh national football team . Lewis' debut was against England on February 12, 1927 . The last game was also against England on November 20, 1929.

Bad move against Cardiff

In the history of the FA Cup , Dan Lewis involuntarily has a permanent place: When Cardiff City became the first and to this day only Welsh club to win the cup in 1927, they did so by beating Arsenal 1-0. A long-range shot from Hughie Ferguson slipped through Lewis' arms and rolled under his stomach towards the goal line. Lewis threw himself after the ball, but he elbowed it into the net. The fact that Lewis had been promoted to national goalkeeper for Wales a few months earlier sparked mockery years later.
