Dan Shomron

Dan Shomron (born August 5, 1937 in Kibbutz Ashdot Ja'akov ; † February 26, 2008 in Ra'anana ) was the 13th Chief of Staff of the Israel Defense Forces ( Tzahal / IDF ) from 1987 to 1991 .

In 1956 Dan Schomron was drafted into the Tzahal, during the Sinai Campaign he served in the Israeli Paratrooper Brigade . During the Six Day War he commanded a reconnaissance division on the Egyptian front and was the first paratrooper to reach the Suez Canal. For this action he was awarded the medal for outstanding service . After the war he was transferred to the Panzer Corps.

In the Yom Kippur War , Shomron commanded an armored division that was involved in the siege of the Egyptian Third Armored Division.

In 1974 he was given command of the Israeli infantry and paratroopers. In this role he commanded Operation Entebbe in 1976 . Between 1978 and 1981 was head of the Shomron Southern Command of the IDF. In the course of the Camp David Agreement with Egypt, he was responsible for the dissolution of Israeli settlements and cities on the Sinai Peninsula. In 1983 he founded the IDF's ground troop command (infantry, tanks , artillery and engineers corps) and became its first commander.

From 1985 to 1986 he was Deputy Chief of Staff and at 50 he became the 13th Chief of Staff of the Israel Defense Forces in 1987 . He worked in this role until 1991. During his tenure, the project on the Lavi fighter aircraft was discontinued and the First Gulf War broke out. The decisive moment of his term in office was the outbreak of the First Intifada .

After his service he became chairman of the state armaments company Israel Military Industries . During Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's tenure , Shomron was a member of the Israeli-Palestinian negotiating team and was involved in the Hebron Agreement.

In 2007 he was appointed by the Knesset to investigate the performance of the Israeli General Staff during the Second Lebanon War. He concluded that the war had been waged aimlessly and that the Tzahal needed to improve its overall management and performance.

Shomron died on February 26, 2008. He leaves behind his wife and two children.
