Dan Van Severen studied at the Sint-Lucas Institute in Ghent and at the Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp .

Van Severen reduced his pictorial vocabulary in the 1950s. Gray shapes in various shades dominate his paintings against a blue or brown background. He continued to reduce his images in order to find a unique visual language, where a geometric element, a diamond, cross, circle or diagonal takes center stage. He mainly used white and gray tones, ink and charcoal for his work.

In 1967 Dan Van Severen was a participant in the São Paulo Biennale in Brazil and in 1968 was a participant in the 4th documenta in Kassel with seven of his geometric-abstract pictures .

Van Severen had been a lecturer in painting in Ghent since 1972. His sons also became artists: Maarten Van Severen (1956–2005) was a furniture designer and interior designer, Fabian Van Severen is a designer.
