Dana Beszczynski

Dana Joseph Beszczynski (* 1965 ) is an American basketball coach .

Life

Born in New York , Beszczynski played basketball at Erie Community College in the city of Buffalo before moving to the basketball coaching staff at the same college. He was also a member of the university football team at Erie Community College and held the position of goalkeeper. In 1987 he was the assistant coach of the Bowie State University basketball team. He studied health science, first at Erie Community College, then at the University of Maryland  and the University of Maryland, Baltimore County .

After he had not worked as a basketball coach for a few years, Beszczynski took over the post of assistant coach at Hammond High School in the state of Maryland in 1991 and was also responsible for the second basketball team at the same school, which consisted primarily of players of the younger ages, while he was a full-time one Held a teaching position at another school.

In 1995 Beszczynski went to Austria . From the 1995/96 season he was the coach of the second division Swans Gmunden and rose with the team in 1997 as a successor in the Bundesliga. In June 1997 he was hired by the English team Hemel & Watford Royals as a coach, in October 1997 he was dismissed after the team had lost six games in a row under his leadership.

From 1998 to 2000 and in a second term between 2003 and 2008 he was instrumental in building teams in various sports at the American School in Salzburg . From 2002 to 2004 Beszczynski was the coach of the BBC Linz and led the team to promotion to the Bundesliga.

In addition to his activities in basketball, he was active in Austria as a referee in the sport of baseball  , which he had previously done in his home country. From 2000 he was a referee in the highest Austrian baseball league and from 2004 also in the German baseball league. He was also active as a referee and technical commissioner in international competitions, including European and World Championships. He was a co-founder of the Association of Baseball Referees in Austria. In 2009 he was named Referee of the Year by the European Baseball Association.

From August 2010 to May 2012 he worked in basketball as a youth trainer and coach for the Swans Gmunden. In addition, he was temporarily the assistant coach of Gmundens Bundesliga team.

Between 2014 and 2017 he worked as an assistant coach for the Austrian basketball division WBC Wels and contributed to winning the Supercup in 2016 and the 2016 runner-up. In Wels, he also took on a coaching role in the youth field. Beszczynski returned to the BBC Linz in the summer of 2017, where he became a trainer in the youth field, supervised girls and boys' performance teams and worked on the continuation of a youth guide in the club. In addition, from 2018 to 2020 he was the trainer of the women's basketball performance center Upper Austria and supervised its Bundesliga women as head coach. From January 2019, the US-American also had another job and was responsible for Austria's U16 women as national coach, including at the European B Championship in summer 2019.

In April 2020, the German women's first division club BC Marburg announced Beszczynski's commitment. He signed a three-year contract as head coach. For family reasons, however, he returned to Austria in August 2020.
