action

In 2070, after a devastating nuclear war that devastated large parts of the world, survival is only possible in a few cities. The people there believe that nature defends itself against humans and can only be appeased by donating energy. This energy is gained through the death of a more or less voluntary participant in a dance battle. The city's population is divided into two parts: the simple population, who live on the streets and are partially exposed to the forces of nature without protection, and an elite leadership, who live in a bunker . The young Kostya is captured by the security forces on the run from a brutal black marketeer and forcibly recruited for the scheduled dance battle. With six other participants, only Anya is there voluntarily, he is brought to a living area of the arena in the bunker. Kostya befriends Anya, who is the daughter of “the determiner”, the leader of the city. Anya, who volunteered in revenge against her father, explains to Kostya that the dance fights are manipulated by the DJ and that it only matters that one of the duelists dies so that his energy can be stored in a bracelet at the time of death. Kostya tries to escape, but is betrayed by another participant, while Anya is injured by her opponent during a duel as part of a plot of the rest of the elite against the determiner. Fearing that his daughter would die in the next duel, the determiner allows Kostya to escape again, provided that Anya takes her with him. However, Anya does not want to flee, but demands access to an area of the bunker that she has not yet been able to enter. There the two found out that the energy that is gained in the duels is not used to appease nature, but has to be given in part by the elite to another group called “curators” to extend their own lives. Furthermore, the disasters that break in the city at irregular intervals are initiated from the bunker. Anya goes back to the arena voluntarily, while Kostya escapes from the bunker. When the determiner wants to call off the final fight, he is sentenced to death and killed by the rest of the elite under fabricated reasons. Kostya sees that Anya is being forced into the final fight and voluntarily reports back to the bunker. Since Anya won the fight despite her injury, she now has to fight Kostya. The two refuse to fight and destroy the arena with an overload of energy. When the two are supposed to be killed by the new determiner after the fight, a squad of the curators intervenes and brings Anya and Kostya to a beach in front of another large city.

Reviews

Thomas Badtke from n-tv says "The ambience, the pictures, the mood: All of this harmonizes perfectly with the convincing performance of the actors." Sebastian Groß from moviebreak.de sums up his devastating criticism with "A film as fun as dancing on broken glass with blisters under your feet - barefoot."
