Daniel Alarcón

Daniel Alarcón (born March 5, 1977 in Lima , Peru ) is an American writer of Peruvian origin who lives in Oakland , California. He is a visiting writer at Mills College there.

Alarcón came to the United States at the age of three and grew up in a Spanish-speaking middle-class family in Birmingham, Alabama . At the age of 24 he returned to Lima for some time in the slum of San Juan de Lurigancho to teach photography. Some of the experiences gained there were inspiration for stories in the 'War by Candlelight' collection. Alarcón holds a BA in Anthropology from Columbia University . He is co-editor of the Lima literary magazine Etiqueta Negra . His debut novel Lost City Radio , published in 2007, has been translated into numerous languages ​​and received the 2009 International Literature Prize from the House of World Cultures in Berlin.
