Daniel E. Sutherland

Daniel E. Sutherland (* 1946 ) is an American historian. His research focuses on the social and cultural history of the United States in the 19th century, as well as on historical considerations of the Civil War and Reconstruction . He also deals with British and military history .

Life

Sutherland studied at Wayne State University , where he received a Bachelor of Science degree in June 1968 . From 1968 to 1970 there was a hiatus from his studies when he served in the United States Navy . He was also a member of the United States Navy Reserve from 1964 to 1972. After retiring from active service, he continued his studies at Wayne State University and received a Master of Arts in March 1973 . In June 1974 took place there his promotion to Ph.D. From 1976 to 1977 he was an Adjunct Assistant Professor at Wayne State University and Mercy College of Detroit . In addition, in the summer of 1976 he was Visiting Assistant Professor at the University of Alabama . He then taught at McNeese State University from 1977 to 1989 , first from 1977 to 1983 as an assistant professor , then from 1983 to 1986 as an associate professor and finally from 1986 to 1989 as a professor. In addition, he served as head of the Department of History from 1983 to 1989 . In 1989 he moved to the University of Arkansas . Here he taught from 1989 to 1991 as Associate Professor, from 1991 to 2011 as Professor and since 2011 as Distinguished Professor . From 1992 to 1998 he was chairman of the Department of History there .

Sutherland is a member of the Historical Society , the Southern Historical Association , the Society of Civil War Historians , the Society for Military History , the College Art Association , the Nineteenth Century Studies Association , the Association of Historians of Nineteenth-Century Art , the Association of Historians of American Art , the British and American Nineteenth-Century Historians , the St. George Tucker Society, and the Arkansas Historical Association .

His book The Confederate Carpetbaggers was nominated for the Pulitzer Prize . The same applies to his book Seasons of War , which was also nominated for the Lincoln Prize and in 1996 received the Douglas Southall Freeman History Award from the Military Order of the Stars and Bars . His book A Savage Conflict received the Jefferson Davis Award of the American Civil War Museum in 2009 , the Distinguished Book Award of the Society for Military History in 2010 and the Tom Watson Brown Book Award given by the Watson-Brown Foundation together with the Society of Civil War Historians .
