Daniel Sutherland

Daniel Alexander Sutherland (born April 17, 1869 in Pleasant Bay , Cape Breton Island , Canada , †  March 24, 1955 in Abington , Pennsylvania ) was an American politician . Between 1921 and 1931 he represented the Alaska Territory in the US House of Representatives as a delegate .

Early years

In 1876 Daniel Sutherland came to Essex , Massachusetts with his parents . There he attended public schools. He then worked in a general store and later in the fish trade. In 1898, Sutherland moved to Circle in the Alaska Territory. Sutherland was also active as a prospector and became a partner in a mining company. In 1909 he moved to Juneau .

Political career

Daniel Sutherland became a member of the Republican Party . Between 1912 and 1920 he was in the Senate of the Territory and in 1915 he was its President. During the First World War he was part of the US Navy Reserve . Between March 4, 1921 and March 3, 1931, he served five terms as a delegate from his territory to the US House of Representatives. But since Alaska was not an official state of the United States at the time, it also had no voting rights in Congress . In 1930 Daniel Sutherland renounced another candidacy.

During his time in Congress, he campaigned for the establishment of air mail for Alaska. In the 1930s, the airplane established itself as the main means of transport in Alaska. Sutherland spent the last decades of his life in Pennsylvania. From 1931 to 1950 he was a purchaser for the Ogontz School's material procurement . Daniel Sutherland died in Abington in 1955.
