Howard Wallace Pollock (born April 11, 1920 in Chicago , Illinois , † January 9, 2011 in Coronado , California ) was an American politician . Between 1967 and 1971 he represented the state of Alaska in the US House of Representatives .

Early years

From 1935 to 1939 Howard Pollock attended Perkinston High School in Perkinston ( Mississippi ) and then until 1941 the Junior College in the same city. During the Second World War he served in the US Navy from 1941 to 1946 . After the war, Pollock studied first in Santa Clara and then until 1955 at the University of Houston law. After being admitted to the bar, he began working in this profession. In 1960 he was still studying business management at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Cambridge .

Business and political advancement

Pollock rose quickly in the business world. He became president of Alaska Gold and Other Products Inc. and the Falcon Alaska Oil Company . He was also Chairman of the Board of Directors of Alaskan Seafood Inc. Politically, Pollock became a member of the Republican Party . From 1953 to 1955 he was a member of the House of Representatives for the Alaska Territory . Between 1961 and 1963 and from 1965 to 1966 he was a member of the Alaska Senate . From 1960 to 1966 he was also on the board of his party in Alaska.

Congressman

In the 1966 congressional elections , Pollock was elected to the US House of Representatives with 51.6% of the vote against incumbent Ralph Julian Rivers . In 1968 he was confirmed with 54.2% of the vote against his future successor Nick Begich (45.8%). This allowed him to represent the state of Alaska in Congress between January 3, 1967 and January 3, 1971 . In 1970 he decided not to run again. Instead, he ran unsuccessfully for the governor of Alaska.

From 1971 to 1983, Howard Pollock worked for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration . He was also a delegate to the United Nations Conference on the Law of the Sea . Since 1998 he lived in Arlington ( Virginia ).
