Daniel Hofstetter (born May 23, 1828 in Gais ; † September 20, 1910 there , reformed , resident in Gais) was a Swiss politician (liberal) and entrepreneur .

Life

Daniel Hofstetter was born on May 23, 1828 in Gais as the son of the manufacturer and farmer Daniel Hofstetter senior and Willi, born Regina. Hofstetter, who received little schooling, was initially involved in the manufacture and trading of muslin items in the 1850s before he started a successful yarn trade with his brother Johannes . As a part-time job he ran an agricultural business.

Daniel Hofstetter married Anna Barbara, the daughter of the wine merchant Johann Konrad Kern, in 1856 . He died on September 20, 1910, four months after turning 82 in Gais.

Political career

Daniel Hofstetter, member of the Liberal Party, held the office of a local council in Gais from 1859 to 1962 , and then from 1864 to 1868 that of mayor . At the cantonal level, he sat from 1859 to 1862 and from 1888 to 1891 in the Ausserrhoder Grand and Cantonal Council . In between, Daniel Hofstetter was a member of the government council of Appenzell Ausserrhoden from 1868 to 1875 . There he officiated initially until 1871 as a state ensign, then until 1872 as state blanket master and finally until 1875 as state governor. He also acted as district judge from 1862 to 1864 and as chief judge from 1876 to 1888, of which he was president from 1883. He ran for parliamentary elections in 1878 and was a member of the National Council until 1882 .

He was also represented in the synod from 1868 to 1874 and in the cantonal bank administration from 1876 to 1896. Daniel Hofstetter appeared as a sponsor of a railway connection St. Gallen – Gais . As an autodidact, he achieved a high reputation and wealth.
