Daniel Macnee
Sir Daniel Macnee (born June 4, 1806 in Fintry , Stirlingshire , † January 17, 1882 in Edinburgh ) was a Scottish portrait painter.
At the age of 13 Daniel Macnee began training with the renowned landscape painter John Knox , together with Horatio McCulloch and William Leighton Leitch . He then worked as a lithographer for a year and then had a job in which he decorated the lids of wooden snuffboxes with ornaments. Finally, he studied at the Trustees' Academy Edinburgh and colored engravings for the engraver William Home Lizars . In 1832 Macnee established himself as an artist in Glasgow and became a sought-after portraitist there.
In 1829 Macnee became a member of the newly formed Royal Scottish Academy . In 1876 he succeeded the late President of the Academy, Sir George Harvey , and was knighted as a Knight Bachelor in 1877 . In the same year he became a member of the Royal Society of Edinburgh . From that time until his death Macnee lived in Edinburgh. His social character and his inimitable way of telling amusing Scottish anecdotes made him extremely popular there.
