George Harvey

Sir George Harvey (born February 1, 1806 in St Ninians (now Stirling ), † January 22, 1876 in Edinburgh ) was a Scottish painter.

At the age of 18, Harvey became a student at Trustee's Academy in Edinburgh in 1824 and, with the help of his teachers, was able to successfully debut at an exhibition two years later with his picture “the village school”. That same year he was invited by the founders of the Royal Scottish Academy to join them.

1829, the Royal Scottish Academy Harvey appointed Fellow and in 1867 he was Queen Victoria to Knight Bachelor beaten. George Harvey died in Edinburgh on January 22, 1876, a week before his 70th birthday.

In Harvey's early works, themes from genre painting dominate ; Pictures that show an observation of human nature, pleasing composition and a warm color scheme. It was only in his later works that Harvey turned more to mannerism . In the last ten years of his life he devoted himself increasingly to landscape painting and mostly found his subjects on the picturesque west coast of Scotland . Also noteworthy in Harvey's artistic work is his great cycle from the history of the 17th century of his homeland; including u. a. the painting "Sermon of the Covenanters ", which was created in 1830.
