Daniel Purcell

Daniel Purcell [ ˈdænjəl ˈpɜːsl̩ ] (* around 1664; † 1717 (buried November 26th) in London ) was an English composer.

Life

Daniel Purcell was the younger brother or cousin of Henry Purcell . He is mentioned in 1679 as a chorister of the Chapel Royal . During his time as organist at Magdalen College at Oxford University from 1688 to 1695, he composed anthems and an ode for St. Cecilia's Day . He wrote numerous songs and contributed music for the final masque of his brother's semi-opera, The Indian Queen . Between 1696 and 1707 he wrote incidental music for more than 40 stage works, among others by John Dryden , Thomas d'Urfey , Colley Cibber and Pierre Motteux . In 1700 he was awarded the third prize in a competition for the setting of William Congreve's masque The Judgment of Paris ( The Judgment of Paris ). In 1713 Purcell became organist at St. Andrew's Church, Holborn, London .

His other compositions include 11 solo hymns, six cantatas , courtly odes and some instrumental works.
