Daniel West "Danny" Lee (born July 9, 1919 in Wisconsin , † November 28, 2014 in Prescott , Arizona ) was an American animation technician .

Life

Daniel Lee was the son of animation engineer Carl Lee , who worked on the films in the Abbott & Costello series. Lee junior initially worked as a freelancer. In a career spanning more than 30 years, he has worked on more than 50 films. In particular, he worked for Walt Disney Studios , which he joined in 1969.

Probably his most famous scene is the finale in Arthur Penn's Bonnie and Clyde , in which the gangster couple is shot dead by the police in a hail of bullets. For this scene he is said to have used around 1000 rounds of ammunition. Lee is also said to have been the first trick technician to use blood capsules and electrically detonated firecrackers to mimic gunshot wounds.

In 1972 he received the Oscar for the best special effects for the film The Daredevil Witch in Her Flying Bed together with his colleagues Alan Maley and Eustace Lycett . In 1980 he was also nominated for an Oscar for his work on The Black Hole .

In 1981 he retired, but opened Danny Lee Studios in Chatsworth , California with his wife Jane , where he passed his knowledge on to students.
