The Dapingium is the older of the two chronostratigraphic stages of the Middle Ordovician series of the Ordovician in geological history . The Dapingium stage corresponds in absolute dating to the period from about 470 to 467.3 million years. The Dapingium follows the Floium and is replaced by the Darriwilium .
Naming and history
The stage is named after a small village near the GSSP. The GSSP was proposed by an international group of scientists in 2005 and confirmed by the ICS in 2007 . The name for the stage was published in 2009. The Dapingium corresponds to the middle and higher part of the earlier Arenigium series (or level).
Definition and GSSP
The upper limit of the level is the first appearance of the graptolite species Undulograptus austrodentatus . The lower limit (and thus also the upper limit of the previous level of the floium ) is defined by the first appearance of the conodont species Baltoniodus triangularis . The official reference profile (GSSP = "Global Stratotype Section and Point") for the Dapingium is the Huanghuachang profile in the Chinese province of Hubei , 22 km northeast of Yichang on the road from Yichang towards Xinshan County .
