The Paibium is a time interval in the history of the earth . It is the lowest chronostratigraphic level of the Furongium series of the Cambrian . The lower limit of the Paibium is geochronologically at around 497 million years, the upper limit at around 494 million years ago. The Paibium precedes the Guzhangium stage of the as yet unnamed 3rd series of the Cambrian and is followed by the Jiangshanium .
Naming and history
The stage is named after the small town of Paibi near the GSSP (global reference for the lower limit of the stage). The name was proposed in 2002 by the international working group for the 8th stage of the Cambrian of the subcommittee of Cambrian stratigraphy around the Chinese geologist Peng Shanchi and ratified by the IUGS in 2003 .
Definition and GSSP
The lower limit of the level is defined by the first appearance of the agnostoid trilobite species Glyptagnostus reticulatus . The limit to the next following Jiangshanium is the first appearance of the trilobite species Agnostotes orientalis and Irvingella angustilimbata . A profile (“Paibi profile”) in the Huaqiao Formation in the Hunan Province , China, was determined as the GSSP .
