The Terreneuvian is the lower chronostratigraphic series of the Cambrian in geological history. The series is dated to about the period from about 541 to about 521 million years. The Terreneuvium is overlaid by an as yet unnamed series (2nd series) of the Cambrian. The Terreneuvian follows the Ediacarian system (or period) of the Neoproterozoic era ( Precambrian ).

Naming and history

The series was officially named after the French name Newfoundland ( Terre-Neuve ) in 2007 . It is part of the four-part concept of the Cambrian, which was proposed in 1998 after the lower limit of the system was redefined (see below). The Terreneuvium covers a period or part of the geological tradition before the appearance of the trilobites in the fossil record . It was therefore traditionally assigned to the Upper Precambrian .

Definition and GSSP

Global Boundary Stratotype Section and Point (GSSP) of the Cambrian, Terreneuvian and Fortunium in Fortune Head Ecological Reserve , Newfoundland, Canada

The beginning of the Terreneuvian, Fortunian , Cambrian and thus the Paleozoic and Phanerozoic is defined by the first appearance of the trace fossil Treptichnus (Phycodes) pedum . Also, the limit is very close to a carbon isotope negative anomaly. The upper limit (or rather the base of the 2nd series of the Cambrian) has not yet been formally determined, but will likely be based on the first appearance of the trilobites . The GSSP of the Terreneuvium series (and the Fortunium stage) is an outcrop of the Chapel Island Formation on the cliff Fortune Head on the Burin Peninsula in the southeast of the Canadian island of Newfoundland . It was already determined as a reference for the base of the Cambrian in 1992, 15 years before the official introduction of the name "Terreneuvium".

Breakdown

The Terreneuvium is divided into two chronostratigraphic levels ; the upper level has not yet been formally named.
