The Fortune Head Ecological Reserve is a nature reserve on the island of Newfoundland, which belongs to the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador . It was established as a provisional reserve in 1990. In 1992 the protected area received its current status.
location
The 2.21 km² protected area is located on the north coast of the Burin Peninsula , 1.6 km west of the Fortune community .
Geological importance
The rock is exposed on the cliffs of the seashore . The so-called Global Boundary Stratotype Section and Point (GSSP) on the layer boundary between Ediacarian , the most recent period of the Precambrian , and the Cambrian is located there. The fortunian forms a chronostratigraphic stage of terreneuvian - series and has an age of 541.0 ± 1.0 mya . The trace fossil of the rock layer is Treptichnus pedum ( Seilacher , 1955).
