Dara Ó Briain (born February 4, 1972 in Bray , County Wicklow ) is an Irish stand-up comedian , television presenter and author.

Life

Ó Briain was born in Bray, County Wicklow, Ireland in 1972. He attended a Catholic boys school in Dublin and later studied mathematics and theoretical physics at University College Dublin . At that time he participated with great success in the debating club and co-produced the university newspaper. After graduation, he worked as a presenter of children's and family programs for the public broadcaster RTÉ . After a few years he began touring Europe as a stand-up comedian and became increasingly well-known and successful in the English-speaking world, so that he often made over 150 appearances per tour.

Since 2006 he has appeared in the documentary series Three Men in a Boat . He is also known in Great Britain as a co-host of the television shows The Panel and Mock the Week .

With Beyond the Sky , Ó Briain published his first book for children in 2017, which will be followed by a second in autumn 2018 under the title The Amazing World Beyond Your Eyes .

Private

Ó Briain's father set great store by the emancipation of the Irish and their language, and changed the English surname "O'Brien" back to the original Irish form. To this day, Ó Briain only communicates with his father in Irish .

Ó Briain has been married to Susan, a surgeon, since 2006. The two live in London with their son and daughter, who was born in 2008 .

In 2015 an asteroid was named after him: (4901) Ó Briain .
