Darchen , also Tarchan or Taqin ( Simplified Chinese塔钦, Traditional Chinese Pin, Pinyin tǎqīn), is a village at 4575 meters above sea level in the Burang District of the Tibet Autonomous Region in China . It was formerly known as Lhara and is still signposted accordingly. Darchen used to be an important sheep station for nomads and their flocks and had only two permanent buildings, only one of which survived the Cultural Revolution and is now used to accommodate Tibetan pilgrims.

Darchen is right in front of the holy mountain Kailash and is the starting point for pilgrimages such as the Parikrama . The increasing number of tourists is now also having a negative impact on the environment. In 2002, a temporary high point was reached with around 200,000 pilgrims. In addition, around 9,000 tourists were registered in the accommodation facilities in Darchen.

Darchen is a one-day bus ride (approx. 330 km) from the city of Shiquanhe or (Ali) in the northeast, where the Ngari-Günsa Airport , which opened on July 1, 2010 and offers flights to Lhasa and Chengdu twice a week , is located.
