Hanžeković Memorial
The Hanžeković Memorial is an athletics and the oldest sporting event in Croatia . It will be held in the Sportski Park Mladost in Zagreb and is part of the World Challenge series.
history
As a local event between two clubs, it was held for the first time in 1951 and achieved international status just seven years later.
It is named after Boris Hanžeković , one of the best athletes from Croatia before World War II . Hanžeković refused to run for the independent state of Croatia during World War II . Because of his connection to the partisans , he was arrested in July 1944 and taken to the Jasenovac concentration camp . He was killed on April 22, 1945 while attempting to escape.
The shot put competition has been taking place outside the stadium since 2014 and is called the Ivan Ivančić Memorial .
