The airport Ngari-Günsa or Ngari Gunsa Airport (chin. 阿里昆莎 机场; Pinyin: Ali Kunsha jichang ) ( IATA code : NGQ, ICAO code : ZUAL) is an airport on the upper reaches of the Indus, which is used for civil as well as military purposes in the municipality of Günsa (昆莎 乡; Pinyin : Kūnshā Xiāng ) of Gar County in Ngari administrative district .
The airport started operations on July 1, 2010, making it the fourth airport in the Tibet Autonomous Region of the People's Republic of China after Lhasa , Qamdo-Bamda and Nyingchi . There are flight connections to Lhasa, 1,100 km away, and from there to Chengdu, 1,300 km away .
With a height of 4,274 meters above sea level, it is currently the third highest airport in the world after Qamdo-Bamda (4,334 m) and Kangding (4,280 m). In 2019, however, Nagqu Dagring Airport, which is currently under construction, will be the highest airport in the world at 4,436 m.
The airport has a 4,500 m long and 45 m wide runway made of concrete with the orientation 15/33. Around the middle of the runway, a short taxiway branches off to the apron. The runway is longer than most of the world's runways, but because of the thin air at great heights and the resulting reduced lift, aircraft have to take off and land at significantly higher speeds than usual. The Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) has therefore only approved the airport for the Airbus A 319 ( Air China ).
The airport is just under 200 km from the village of Darchen at the foot of the Kailash and near Lake Manasarovar , both sanctuaries in particular for Buddhists and Hinduists , so that a considerable increase in both pilgrimage and tourist traffic is expected.
