Dares Phrygius

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Under the pseudonym Dares Phrygius , a Latin novel on the Trojan War with the title Acta diurna belli Troiani was published in the 5th century . This apparently goes back to a lost Greek original and represents an alternative to the work of Dictys Cretensis , which treats the same subject from a Greek point of view.

In the Acta diurna , Dares Phrygius, whose true identity is still unclear, changes the Homeric version of the legend in a number of important points. Overall, the plot is rationalized and deheroized, the anger of Achilles made understandable through the description of his love for Polyxena , the daughter of the Trojan king Priam .

As an alleged eyewitness report from the Trojan side, the work can be seen as an alternative to the Ephemeris belli Troiani des Dictys Cretensis. The arrangements of the Troy material by these two authors had a decisive influence on the reception of this topic in the Middle Ages and in the early modern period. From the 12th century onwards, they became the basis of "historical knowledge" about the Trojan War. When designing an Achilles, Goethe still used Dictys and Dares for the plot.
