Ferdinand Master
Ferdinand Meister (born November 29, 1828 in Eisenach , † October 12, 1915 in Breslau ) was a German classical philologist and high school teacher. He taught at grammar schools in Eisenach, Weimar, Liegnitz and from 1861 to 1899 at the Maria Magdalenen grammar school in Breslau.
life and work
Ferdinand Meister, the son of the pensioner Johann Friedrich Meister, attended high school in Eisenach and, after graduating from school, studied classical philology in Jena and Leipzig from 1846 to 1850 . From 1850 he taught at the private school run by Karl Volkmar Stoy . In 1853 he was awarded a Dr. phil. PhD . In 1855 he went to the Eisenach grammar school as an assistant teacher. In 1857 he moved to Weimar, in 1858 as a civil inspector at the Knights' Academy in Liegnitz .
Meister achieved his position in life in 1861 at the Maria-Magdalenen-Gymnasium in Breslau , where he was appointed a collaborator (at the same time as his friend Rudolf Peiper ). A year later he married Peiper's sister Theone (1842-1924). In 1868 Meister was appointed senior teacher, in 1883 he was given the title of professor. In 1899 he retired. After his death at the age of 86 he was buried in Eisenach.
In addition to his school service, Master found time for scientific work, which he dedicated in particular to the Latin authors Quintilian , Dares Phrygius and Dictys Cretensis . After text-critical and exegetical preparatory work, which he published in school programs and magazines, he published a critical edition of the Dictys in 1872 and one of the Dares in 1873. These editions were based on an intensive study of the known manuscripts and remained in use for a long time. Werner Eisenhut published a new edition of the dictys in 1958; a newer critical edition of Dares does not exist to this day.
In addition, Meister published a commentary on the 10th book of Quintilians Institutio oratoria in 1882 and a critical edition of the entire work from 1886–1887, for which he had collected material for almost 30 years. Master's text design and critical principles formed the basis for the later critical edition of Ludwig Radermacher (2 volumes, 1907–1935).
