Darren Debono (born January 9, 1974 ) is a retired Maltese football player on the position of defender .

career

Debono played 56 caps for the Maltese national team from 1996 to 2002. During this time his club was Valletta FC . Alan Shearer's elbow broke his nose during a friendly against England in 2000 .

After football

After retiring from football, Debono ran a restaurant and owned fishing boats. He was arrested in Lampedusa in October 2017 and charged with involvement in smuggling oil from Libya.
