Darryl A. Williams

Lt. Gene. Darryl A. Williams (b.1961 in Alexandria , Virginia , United States ) is a Lieutenant General in the United States Army who currently serves as the 60th Superintendent of the United States Military Academy . He is also the first African American to hold this position.

Military career

Williams graduated from West Point in 1983 and earned masters degrees in leadership development, military arts and science, and national security and strategic studies.

He then was Deputy Chief of Staff of the United States of America for Europe, stationed in Germany and Deputy General Surgeon for Soldier Care and Handover. He was later deputy general in command of the Republic of Korea . He also served as the commander of the American Army of Africa in Italy. During this time, President Barack Obama announced the establishment of a command center in Monrovia , Liberia , and appointed Williams to lead the US response to the Ebola crisis. He oversaw up to 3,000 soldiers and medical personnel. Most recently, Williams was in command of the Allied Land Command for the North Atlantic Treaty Organization in Turkey. Williams' awards include the Distinguished Service Medal , Presidential Service Badge, and Defense Superior Service Medal .
