Darshan Singh Gill

Tan Sri Dato 'Seri Darshan Singh Gill (* 1948 in India ) is a Malaysian lawyer , prominent representative of the Sikh population in Malaysia and a cycling official.

Darshan Singh Gill attended the Anglo-Chinese School in Ipoh . He later studied law in London , where he also graduated. Back in Malaysia, he worked in administration before opening a law firm in Ipoh.

Gill was the first Sikh and non-Malay ethnic to be appointed to the Royal Council of Perak by Sultan Azlan Shah . From 1990 to 1994 he was President of the Malaysian Sikh Union and is currently President of the Malaysia National Sikhs Movement (GERAKSIKH). He is also involved in consumer protection in the Federation of Malaysian Consumers Associations .

In 1977, Gill became president of the Perak Cycling Association , later president and current honorary president of the Malaysian National Cycling Federation (MNCF) and from 1996 to 2005 president of the Asian Cycling Confederation (ACC). He was also the first Malaysian to serve on the board of the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI). He initiated the construction of the Rakyat Velodrome in his hometown of Ipoh and collected private donations of around 850,000 euros for it. During his MNCF presidency, the Tour de Langkawi was held for the first time in 1996. He also organized track cycling world cup races , Asian cycling championships and other national and international competitions.

Darshan Singh Gill received the state honorary degrees Tan Sri (1997) and Dato 'Seri (2006) as well as numerous honors in Malaysia and other Asian countries. In 2010 he was inducted into the Hall of Fame of the Olympic Committee of Malaysia.
