Rakyat Velodrome

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Rakyat Velodrome is a cycling track in the Malay city of Ipoh , around 200 kilometers north of the capital Kuala Lumpur .

The velodrome was built in 1989 on the initiative of Tan Sri Dato 'Seri Darshan Singh Gill , then President of the Malay Cycling Federation, the Malaysian National Cycling Federation (MNCF). For this purpose he collected over three million ringgit on a private basis (the equivalent of around 850,000 euros). The Rakyat Velodrome is open, the 250 meter long hardwood track. Until then, Malay track cyclists often had to be sent abroad to train.

From 1988 to 2018 there was another cycling track, the Cheras Velodrome in Kuala Lumpur, a 333-meter-long open concrete track. Both cycle tracks did not meet international standards and needed renovation; Trainers told journalists several times that they were concerned about the safety of athletes. An indoor cycling track is being planned in the capital. The Cheras Velodrome was demolished in 2017.

Numerous international and national track cycling competitions took place on the Rakyat Velodrome , including the UCI-B World Championships in 1997, races of the Track Cycling World Cup in 2000 and 2001 and the track competitions of the Southeast Asian Games in 1989. In 2018, extensive renovation work was carried out on the cycle track. In August 2018 she was certified by the UCI for international competitions.
