Matthias Black (* in Lübeck ; † 1696 ibid) was a painter who worked in Lübeck in the second half of the 17th century.

Life

Little is known about Black's early life and education. He was the son of the master craftsman of the Marienkirche Gerd Black († 1647). He traveled to the Netherlands and England for training. According to his own statements, he spent 36 weeks in London, not without danger , and witnessed the execution of King Charles I (January 30, 1649) here. On November 16, 1649 he was approved as a freeman by the council of the Hanseatic City .

As early as 1646, he created a full portrait of Pastor Michael Siricus (1589–1648) in oil on wood for the Marienkirche in Lübeck , which was in the sacristy in 1906. For the epitaphs of Lübeck's mayors Anton Köhler and Hermann von Dorne as well as the main pastor to Marien Jacob Stolterfoht , he created the portraits contained in them. They were destroyed as a result of the air raid on Lübeck in 1942.

For the Lübeck Aegidienkirche in 1663 he created a portrait of the pastor M. Johannes Zeidler, for the Jacobikirche he painted a bust of Daniel Wulff.

In 1979, the Museum of Art and Cultural History of the Hanseatic City of Lübeck was able to replace the portraits of the pastor at the Lübeck Aegidienkirche Johannes Ricke (1587–1648) and his wife Barbara Ricke, born on the New York art market with the help of private donations . Stampelin (1577–1647). Both portraits are painted in oil on oak (59 × 44.5 cm) and the pastor's portrait is signed by Black and dated 1648. The portrait of the pre-deceased wife may have been made in the year of her death. Pastor Reiche had an epitaph with a 3/4 portrait set in the Aegidienkirche by his sons in 1649.

Some of the portraits in the mayor's gallery in Lübeck's town hall were ascribed to Black, including that of Gottschalk von Wickede .

In the 1680s he was also an art dealer, as can be seen from his correspondence with Benedict von Cunnigham , court marshal of Duke Johann Adolf (Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Plön) , which has been preserved in the Schleswig-Holstein State Archives . Also in this correspondence he states that he portrayed the foreign legates who wanted to bring about peace , the dukes of Saxe-Lauenburg , in particular Duke Julius Franz (Sachsen-Lauenburg) ( seven times ) and Duke Christian Ludwig I (Mecklenburg) .

His daughter became a conventual in the St. John's Monastery in Lübeck.
