Due to the early death of his older half-brother Franz Erdmann , he became Duke of Saxony-Lauenburg in 1666. He succeeded in redeeming the city of Mölln , which had been pledged to Lübeck for centuries, and other lands. After the death of his mother, Julius Franz lived mainly on her estate in Bohemia. After his death there were inheritance disputes. Shortly before his death, he had his daughters under the protection of Emperor Leopold I asked. Although the female line of succession was introduced in Sachsen-Lauenburg , the emperor sequestered the land and the daughters were left with only their Bohemian possessions. The two sisters came to see their aunt at Reichstadt Palace . Julius Franz was the last Lauenburger Duke of the House of Ascania . With him, the line from Sachsen-Lauenburg-Ratzeburg died out, the title went to the Welfs in Braunschweig.
