Franz Erdmann (Saxony-Lauenburg)

Franz Erdmann von Sachsen-Lauenburg (born February 25, 1629 in Theusing ; † July 30, 1666 in Schwarzenbek ) was Duke of Sachsen-Lauenburg and Imperial Field Marshal from 1665 to 1666 .

Life

Franz Erdmann was the eldest son of Duke Julius Heinrich von Sachsen-Lauenburg (1586–1665) from his second marriage to Elisabeth Sophie (1589–1629), daughter of Elector Johann Georg von Brandenburg and widowed Princess Radziwill . The prince was brought up in Lutheran doctrine even though his father had converted to Catholicism .

Franz Erdmann served both in the Swedish army as major general against Poland and in the imperial army as field marshal in the war against France.

Franz Erdmann married his cousin Sibylle Hedwig (1625–1703), daughter of Duke August von Sachsen-Lauenburg , in 1654 . In the same year he had the Fürstenhof Palace built in Groß Grönau , and later he set up a mint and a printing press in this place, which he made his residence. He succeeded his father as Duke of Saxony-Lauenburg in 1665, but did not rule for a full year before he died. During his reign, the Lübeck craftsmen uprising of 1665, which also spread to the Duchy of Lauenburg, and the intensification of the persecution of witches with increasing executions.

He was accepted as a member of the Literary Fruitful Society under the company name Der Fortwuchierenden .

Franz Erdmann's marriage remained childless, so his younger half-brother Julius Franz followed him as Duke .
