Tuanku Muhibuddin Azlan Shah ibni al-Marhum Yusuf Izzuddin Shah Ghafarullahu-Lah (born April 19, 1928 in Batu Gajah , Perak , Malaysia ; † May 28, 2014 ) was Sultan of Perak from 1984 until his death and from April 26, 1989 until April 25, 1994 as Yang di-Pertuan Agong King of Malaysia.

Life

After attending school in Malaysia, he studied law at the University of Nottingham and was admitted to the bar in London in 1954 . After returning to Malaysia, he became a judge and most recently Lord President of the Supreme Court.

In 1984 he succeeded his relative Idris Shah II. Sultan of Perak .

On March 2, 1989, he was elected Yang di-Pertuan Agong by the nine-member Sultan's Council and thus succeeded Mahmud Iskandar Ismail , the Sultan of Johor , as King of Malaysia. He officially took office on April 26, 1989, becoming the ninth King of Malaysia since sovereignty from the United Kingdom on August 31, 1957. On April 26, 1994, Tuanku Jaafar , ruler of Negeri Sembilan , succeeded him as King of Malaysia.

In addition to his work as ruler of Perak, Sultan Azlan Shah was also Chancellor of Malaya University in Kuala Lumpur and President of the Asian Hockey Federation . The Sultan Azlan Shah Cup , a tournament for men's national hockey teams, and the Sultan Azlan Shah airport in Ipoh are named after him.
