Tuanku Jaafar
Duli Yang Maha Mulia Almarhum Tuanku Ja'afar ibni Almarhum Tuanku Abdul Rahman , GCB (born July 19, 1922 in Klang ; † December 27, 2008 ) was the tenth Yang di-Pertuan Agong (Electoral King) of Malaysia from April 26, 1994 to April 25, 1999 and from 1967 to 2008 the fourth Yamtuan Besar by Negeri Sembilan .
Youth and education
Tuanku Ja'afar was the second son of Tuanku Abdul Rahman ibni Almarhum Tuanku Muhammad and the first son of four children of his civil wife, Dulcie Campell or better known as Che 'Engku Maimunah binti Abdullah. The couple later separated.
Ja'afar studied at Malay College Kuala Kangsar and the University of Nottingham before moving to Balliol College and the London School of Economics and Political Science . He entered the Malaysian civil and diplomatic service.
Early career
During the Japanese occupation of Malaysia, Ja'afar served in the Seremban State Office and then as District Officer of Rembau from 1946 to 1947. After returning from the United Kingdom in 1952, Tuanku Ja'afar held several public service positions u. a. Assistant to the Secretary of State of Perak , Assistant to the District Officer of Parit, Perak, and the District Officer of Tampin.
diplomat
Ja'afar's diplomatic career began in 1957. His first job was as Charge d'Affaires in Washington, DC , USA, followed by the position of First Secretary at the Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York. He then worked as consular and deputy high commissioner at the High Commission of Malaysia in London. Tuanku Ja'afar was later appointed Malaysian Ambassador to Egypt and then High Commissioner to Nigeria and Ghana .
Yang di-Pertuan Besar
Ja'afar planned to work at the Malaysian embassy in Japan, but was recalled by the Negeri Sembilan state government after the death of his half-brother Tuanku Munawir, the then ruler of Negeri Sembilan, in 1967.
All four Undang (Territorial Chiefs) had unanimously chosen Tuanku Ja'afar as Yang di-Pertuan Besar of Negeri Sembilan. The choice was controversial because the actual heir to the throne, Tuanku Munawir's son Tunku Muhriz, was passed over. It is believed that the then Prime Minister of Malaysia, Tunku Abdul Rahman, instructed the council not to vote for Tunku Muhriz because of his youth - he was only eighteen at the time.
Yang di-Pertuan Agong
Tuanku Ja'afar was the tenth Yang di-Pertuan Agong of Malaysia from April 26, 1994 to April 25, 1999. He succeeded Azlan Shah .
During his tenure in Malaysia in 1998 the 16th Commonwealth Games and the APEC summit were held.
