William Flackton (born March 27, 1709 in Canterbury ; † January 5, 1798 ibid) was an English bookseller, publisher, music collector and composer .

Life

From the age of seven, from 1716 to 1725, William Flackton received musical training as a choirboy at Canterbury Cathedral . During this time he began an apprenticeship with a bookseller. In 1727 Flackton opened his own bookstore and publisher. From 1735 he was organist at the church in neighboring Faversham . William Flackton began organizing public concerts in Canterbury after 1730 and quickly became the city's main concert organizer. As a music collector, he left behind a manuscript collection (Flackton Collection) of English church music from the 17th and 18th centuries, which was put together in part with the organist from Canterbury, Daniel Henstridge (~ 1650–1736) and which is kept in the British Library .

Flackton's compositions no longer correspond to the style of the time they were composed; in part, like his viola sonatas, they are based on models from the early 18th century, in which the style of Francesco Geminiani can be found again. These sonatas were probably created from a lack of available solo literature for viola. Flackton's surviving works include some vocal works, some with instrumental accompaniment, such as songs, hymns, anthems and a cantata. His instrumental works include 6 trio sonatas for 2 violins and bc (1758), 3 solos for viola and bc and 3 solos for cello and bc op.2, 6 overtures for harpsichord op.3 (1771), 2 further solos (1 for viola, 1 for cello) with Bc (1776). In the foreword to his sonatas for tenor (or tenor violin, these were the usual English names for viola) Flackton expressly thanks “Mr. Abel ”( Carl Friedrich Abel )“ for reviewing and correcting his manuscripts and expresses the hope that his works may serve to give the neglected instrument a higher degree of admiration and taste ”.
