Paul Philippoteaux
Paul Dominique Philippoteaux (born January 27, 1846 in Paris , † 1923 there ) was a French painter and illustrator.
Life
Philippoteaux was a son of the painter Félix Philippoteaux and received his first artistic lessons from him. He graduated from the Lycée Henri IV with success and then switched to the École des Beaux-Arts . There he was tutored by Léon Cogniet and Alexandre Cabanel , among others . His teachers soon enabled him to take part in the major annual exhibitions of the Salon de Paris .

In addition to his portraits and other oil paintings, Philippoteaux was best known for his monumental panorama pictures . Many of them were created in collaboration with his father.
The Cyclorama of the Battle of Gettysburg is approximately 990 m² and is considered his best known work. In 1879 he accepted the order to create this work. After initial research, he traveled to the United States in April 1882 and photographed the entire battlefield and interviewed survivors such as Abner Doubleday , Winfield Scott Hancock and Oliver Otis Howard . In addition to his father, Philippoteaux supported four other assistants in the preparation.
