Darver Castle ( Irish Caisleán Dhairbhreach ) is a solid house with tower in Ready Penny southwest of Dundalk in the Irish County Louth . The Niederungsburg dates from the 12th century. The name "Darver" is derived from the Irish word Dairbhre (English: oak grove).
history
After the second part of the Anglo-Norman invasion of Ireland in 1171, King Henry II lent 80 hectares of land to Patrick Babe , who had a fortified tower built on a hill within the site. The original buildings were made of wood; the stone tower that has been preserved to this day dates from around 1432. Although the castle was prepared for a siege, there is no evidence that a siege of Darver Castle ever took place.
In 1740 the Babe family sold Darver Castle to Randal Booth and the Booths lived there until 1980. In 1997 the castle was sold to the Carville family , who renovated and refurbished it. Today it is a luxury hotel , wedding venue and restaurant .
