content

The sailor Elis Fröbom lost his father at sea. He feels guilty about his death. When he got home, he received the news that his mother was also dead. Thereupon he expresses his life disgust. While other sailors amuse themselves with girls, he becomes in his melancholy receptive to the call of old Torbern. This lures him into the underground kingdom of the mountain queen. However, since Elis has not lost the longing for people and is therefore not mature enough, the immaterial, pure realm of timelessness remains hidden from him. He is dropped off by a boatman in Falun. There he is led by Torbern to the house of the mine owner. He brings new life to the run-down mine and wins the love of gentle Anna. Although Elis has advertised her, he is overcome with self-doubt that he is just a horrible guest to whom life in this place can never be everything. On the day of the wedding he only follows the Torbern who has appeared and with it the call of the mountain queen into the depths of the mine, as he has shaken the whole world from himself. 50 years later, his body is recovered intact and recognized by his old bride.
