Blockade book

The Blockade Book ( Russian Блокадная книга / Blokadnaja kniga ) is a documentary chronicle of the Leningrad Blockade , which appeared for the first time in the late 1970s and early 1980s. It was co-authored by Daniil Granin (1919–2017) and Ales Adamowitsch (1927–1994). In 1974 the authors began to interview survivors of the 900-day blockade of Leningrad (now St. Petersburg again) by the German Wehrmacht . The book is a documentation of eyewitness reports , memories , diaries and letters .

Part of it was shortened for the first time in the monthly literary magazine Nowy Mir (Новый мир, Eng. "New World") printed (Number XII, 1977, "Chapter from the Blockade Book"). The publication of this book was forbidden in Leningrad , in Leningrad the book appeared only in 1984 after the change of the party leadership of the city and the move from Grigory Romanov to Moscow .

After the book, the documentary film Read the Blockade Book ( Russian Читаем блокадную книгу / Tschitajem blokadnuju knigu , scientific transliteration Čitaem blokadnuju knigu ) was shot by director Alexander Sokurow .

Episodes of the story were used by Yuri Bondarev in the scenario of the second film of the epic Liberation - The Breakthrough (1969).

In 2013, the story was included as No. 1 in the list of "100 books" recommended by the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation to school children for independent reading.

The book has been published in revised editions and has since been translated into many languages.
