The house is black ( Persian خانه سیاه است Chane siah ast , DMG Ḫāneh siāh ast ) is an award-winning documentary from 1962, directed by the Iranian poet Forugh Farrochzad .
The film gives an insight into the Behkadeh Raji leper colony , which was established in 1961 at the instigation of Farah Pahlavi , and focuses on the human condition and the beauty of creation. The recordings of the lepers are underlaid with Farrochzad's rendering of passages from the Old Testament , the Koran and her own poems. It is the only film that the poet has directed. In the course of filming, she developed an affection for Hossein Mansouri , the child of two lepers, whom she later adopted.
