The respected doctor Dr. One evening when he comes home, Lassow finds an unconscious stranger lying on his doorstep. He carries the young woman into his apartment and tries to be resuscitated when the phone rings and Lassow is urgently called to Baron Mallburn. When he arrived at his residence, he found the baron sitting dead in his armchair. Nobody around Mallburn can explain to Lassow what happened here on site. Dr. Lassow returns to his apartment, where the stranger has since regained consciousness. She too is unable to explain what happened to her. Your memory is like obliterated. Lassow gives her accommodation in his house and finally also a name, “Viviana”, because she carries a medallion with the letter “V” with her. In the months that followed, the girl did not regain her memory, but Lassow and “Viviana” got closer and closer, and eventually they both got married.

Several months have passed. One day, Dr. Lassow, like his wife, with a tambourine in hand, performs Spanish dances. Lassow is very astonished by her abilities, which she demonstrates so ecstatically that she finally sinks into his arms completely exhausted. On the evening of the same day, “Viviana” suddenly disappears, and Lassow then rummages through all the pubs and dance halls, always looking for his wife, who may be performing in these places. In a sailor's pin she finally sees his wife, who, however, disappears into the night with a stranger on her arm. Lassow, beside himself with jealousy, follows the couple, pulls out a battered revolver and fires several shots. Then he turns himself in to the police, who cannot report that a crime has occurred that night. So Dr. Lassow released back home. When he arrived there, he was astonished to find that his wife was sleeping blissfully there. He wakes her up and asks “Viviana” where she was, but she doesn't know anything.

In order to uncover his wife's secret, Lassow decides to conduct an unusual experiment. With the help of an electrical apparatus he developed, he tries to awaken the amnesia patient's memory. While “Viviana” sleeps, he irradiates her head. Now the unknown begins to speak from the subconscious. Once, the doctor hears, she came here from Spain to perform as a tambourine dancer. Then she met a man with whom she fell in love. However, one day he left her and she heard nothing more from him. Then she saw him again, but he pretended not to know her. The Spaniard secretly sneaked after him into his apartment and ... Lassow doesn't let his wife talk any more, because suddenly he realizes that the other man could possibly mean Baron Mallburn. Lassow fears that “Viviana” might have murdered the nobleman. He begins to investigate on his own to find out the exact circumstances of Baron Mallburn's death. The doctor thinks he has irrefutable proof of his wife's guilt in his hands when Mallburn's son approaches him and shows the doctor a suicide note from his father. This had obviously taken his own life. Only now is true marital happiness Dr. Nothing in the way of Lassow.

Production notes

The night puzzle was created in mid-1917 in the Messter-Film-Atelier in Berlin's Blücherstraße 32. The four-act act with an original length of 1321 meters passed the film censorship in August 1917 and was premiered on October 19, 1917 in Berlin's Mozart Hall. After Neuzensur in November 1921 shut shortened to 1,178 meters film received the only slightly altered Neutitel night mystery .
