The Poison of the Medici is a German silent film drama from 1918 Erich Kaiser-Titz and Maria Fein in the leading roles.

action

Somewhere in the south. Don Juan d'Alvarez has a dazzling career as an officer ahead of him, and so he is applying to be commanding the Southern Army. Princess Lydia, who is highly regarded at court, intends to stand up for him, because she is in love with the successful handsome boy. But since her god husband watches over her with eagle eyes, she uses a trick to be alone with don Juan. She commits a harmless young thing called Ninon, a dancer by trade, to keep her old man occupied with herself as long as she, Lydia, surrenders to don Juan. Lydia's royal husband has a peculiar hobby: he is passionate about exploring the legendary poison that was once invented by the dukes of the Medicis and is supposed to kill without a trace. Lydia and her beau are not particularly enthusiastic about it, probably also because they suspect what could happen to them when his princely grace learns of his faithless wife's infidelity.

The actress Isa Palestra is completely dedicated to her art. She has her only social bond with her teacher, and the only pleasure off the stage is the daily rides. One day her horse shies away and the cart pulled by Zossen tips over. Don Juan, himself on horseback, finds the beautiful woman lying on the ground and takes care of the young lady. It comes as it has to come: heart meets heart. Princess Lydia will soon be signed off, and don Juan intends to lead the artist to the altar, despite the differences in class. But the princess does not just let herself be pushed away to old age and seeks terrible revenge. She has a plan, and the Medici poison comes in handy for that. She wets flowers with the toxin and sends them to Isa. The deadly substances penetrate her through her skin, and Isa languishes in don Juan's arms.

Production notes

The production, which was made in the Luna-Film studios at Friedrichstrasse 224 in spring 1918, was submitted to censorship in May of the same year and shown for the first time in September at the Kammerlichtspiele on Potsdamer Platz. The length of the four-act vehicle was 1391 meters.

criticism

“Although the action does not take place in the gray Middle Ages, but in an advanced time, the life at court that comes before our eyes here is something new for us that interests us particularly. The decor is carried out with all means of splendor. Maria Fein and Erich Kaiser-Titz, the two well-known film artists, play the leading roles with perfection. "
