The cloud phenomenon of Maloja is a German short - documentary of mountain film -Pioniers Arnold Franck from 1924. Of the originally probably 14 minutes and 30 second film exists only a nine-minute long version, each as nitro copy of the Austrian Film Archive and in the Cinémathèque Suisse has been preserved. The original negative has not survived.
content
The film is dedicated to the natural spectacle of cloud movements high above the peaks of the Engadine mountains . In extensive photo studies, the film mainly shows the unusual cloud formations around the Engadine Malojapass , which are created by special air compensation currents. Moist air turns into clouds and is pushed over the Malojapass like in a waterfall (see also Maloja snake ), while the sun shines above it. The north wind drives the higher clouds back south in the opposite direction. Little by little, the silence and loneliness of the scenery are connoted with shots of two boaters driving on a lake in the face of the imposing mountains.
background
The film was made during a transitional period in the mountain film genre, in which what had previously been documentary films turned into feature films and thus received greater attention than before. The Maloja cloud phenomenon is one of the last films to focus on “a purely optical natural spectacle”. Other films of the time had composed "apparently random shots of nameless skiers and mountaineers" without letting them interact in action, as Fanck had anticipated in the film Im Kampf mit dem Berge (1921). As the genre's popularity grew, audiences demanded more narrative elements, which contemporary film critics partly honored, but partly rejected.
In Olivier Assayas ' film The Clouds of Sils Maria , in which the Maloja snake plays an important role, excerpts from The Maloja Cloud Phenomenon are shown.
