Dasythemis is a genus of dragonflies consisting of four species. The genus belongs to the subfamily Sympetrinae and wasdescribedby Ferdinand Karsch in 1889 . As Generotyp an animal of the hitherto unknown species served Dasythemis liriopa that than today Dasythemis Venosa is known. The distribution area extends from Guyana to Argentina.

Dasythemis species are medium-sized dragonflies and reach lengths between 31 and 39 millimeters. The abdomen is brown to black with yellowish stripes. With age, a dust-like layer covers the abdomen in males. The genus can be distinguished from other genera on the basis of the shape of the abdominal appendages . The wings are transparent. The last antenodal loader in the front wing is complete, so it extends from the Costa loader to the radial artery .
Habitat
The Imagines of the genus Dasythemis live in ponds and swamps where they wait on branches sitting on prey.
