David Bates (* 1840 in Cambridge ; † 1921 ) was an English landscape painter who painted in oils and watercolors .

Life

Bates began working as a porcelain painter at the Royal Worcester Porcelain Factory in Worcester in 1855 , where he specialized in flower painting. He stayed there until 1880 when he started his own business as a painter.

As an outdoor artist, Bates painted landscapes in the Midlands , Scotland and Wales ; also in Switzerland and Egypt . His work shows influences from Benjamin Williams Leader , Joseph Thors and Samuel Henry Baker and is attributed to the Birmingham School of Art .

His works have been exhibited numerous times, including in London at the Royal Academy of Arts , the Grosvenor Gallery , the Royal Society of British Artists , the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colors and the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists . Paintings by Bates can be found in the World Museum Liverpool , the Worcester City Art Gallery & Museum and other galleries and museums.

His son, John Noel Bates (1870–1927), also worked as a landscape painter under the stage name John Bates Noel .
